Full Moon and Telescopes

Filed under: Uncategorized — urbandumpsterdiver @ 1:12 am

Mother load of finds again tonight! Yes!

My wonderful husband jumped into the dumpster (it’s so much nicer to dive with someone) and was all stoked when he saw the 2 telescopes. I’d been talking about one for months that I so wanted one. I love looking at the stars and the moon with one. When I lived in NY, I used to go to the Hayden Planetarium all the time to see the laser light shows and the astronomy shows.

2 telescopes, 3 bags of diapers, half a dozen brand new lipsticks, cosmetics, fig newtons, the list is endless. I saw the craters on the moon tonight with the telescope. A few neighbor kids came by while my husband and I were outside trying to focus in on the moon. They were fascinated with the telescope. We had a short conversation about astronomy. Kids love that stuff.

Brand new DVD player in the trash, in the box, intact. Someone could use that. I’ll find someone who can use that and give it to them.

I was running out of makeup and bought some eye shadow tonight. Every single time I buy someone and I run out, inevitably I find it! (pictures attached). This is high end stuff that I myself will use. I like looking nice but makeup has gotten SO expensive that I tend to not buy the stuff I really like.

I have 3 bags of infant diapers I’ll be giving to a young mother with an infant child. I just need to find her to give to her a bag of diapers. I’ll also give her a container of Similac (when I checked the price of Similac I almost fell over, it’s very expensive and many young mothers just can’t afford it) along with the diapers.

We’re running out of room in our small house for all our finds. It’s time to start giving the stuff away. The law of reciprocity never fails me. I’ve been diving since the latter part of 2008. I started this blog about a year later after my friends insisted I share my finds with the world.

We divers are a different breed of people, maybe a little nuts, but who cares?

I find it morally repugnant to allow this stuff to go to waste. Why buy things when I can find them. I’m also doing these stores a favor. Less waste that the waste management has to haul for them, the less their trash bill. Plus all that stuff stays out of the landfill.

As it says in the bible as you do among the least of them, you do unto me.

God watches when we perform these random acts of kindness. A tally is made on our side when we treat others well. I once was told by a wise woman people treat others how they feel about themselves. Let that sink in.

People treat others as they feel about themselves. Is that not the god awful truth?

  1. I like to think of dumpster divers more as “rescuers of the reusable”. You are only saving what others who apparently have lost their minds have discarded. I don’t dumpster dive (I am a big supporter though) based on where I live and climate but firmly believe the world should have more people who think about the earth’s resources and are less wastefull. It disturbs me that in many parts it is illegal to dive. Go find some real criminal and stop hassling people who are trying to make a difference.

  2. What’s the old saying? “One person’s trash is another person’s treasures.” If everyone would think about the stuff they throw away and how it may help someone else, there would be less waste and more giving today. It’s unfortunate you have to “dive” into some pretty nasty situations sometimes, but the “gold” at the end of the rainbow is well worth it in someone’s eyes. Thanks for showing how to break the “me” syndrome and help others.

  3. Dog, you’re welcome. I’m glad you found my blog and like it. I’m completely stockpiled in my small little beach house with a lot of food and stuff. Stuff I have sorted out to give away.

I’ve found that every single time I need something I usually find it quickly. God works in mysterious ways.

  4. Amen Tammy. I find it odd that local law enforcement will hassle divers. We’re keeping all of this “stuff” out of the landfills and giving it to those who need it. These same law enforcement officers are making a good salary and right now have NO idea how bad things are or what they would do if they were hungry.

It’s easy to be sanctimonius when you have a steady good paycheck.

It’s like those who talk about those lazy people who are on unemployment. Do they really think those who are collecting UI benefits actually like having a 80% reduction in salary?

  7. My roommates dumpster dive and they come home with some amazing stuff. I can’t believe some of the items that are thrown away.

  8. The telescope has given me many hours of enjoyment. It’s not powerful enough to see the planets like Mars, Jupiter or Saturn, but it does show the moon and other objects far away.

  9. Dumpster diving for young people is a good idea. The less you have to buy, the more money you can save, especially now with this lousy economy and high gas prices.

  10. When you find the makeup, is it usually like at the bottom of the bin or is it in garbage bags? Im a beginner and am hoping to find makeup & goods. 🙂 & great finds btw !

  11. Darlana – thank you for visiting my blog. I usually the find the makeup intact and unopened. Sometimes it’s part of a big bag and sometimes loose in the dumpster. It’s a luck of the draw when I find makeup.

I’ve found so much good makeup that I’ve not had to buy makeup in years. Seriously years. Foundation, blush, powder, eye shadow, cold cream, all thrown away.

I hope you find lot of stuff and if you wanna post pictures on my site, please email me and I will post them for you!
