Trolls and Spammers

Filed under: Uncategorized — urbandumpsterdiver @ 7:59 pm

Internet trolls and spammers are IMO useless eaters, a single cell ameoba that is like a house fly you have to swab away.

One of my dear friends mentioned that some of my comments on here from certain people seemed repetitive and smelled of spammers/scammers gleaning info from my site. I’ve deleted all comments that I felt were spam. Information that could hurt dumpster divers ie using my data to further secure their dumpsters and pour more enormous waste into our landfills.

I’m thinking of making this blog private to only those who are on here regularly and by invitation only.

What do you all think?

  1. I have been a reader for some time and enjoy it. I recommend your blog to others. I fear that by making it private many who haven’t found you yet would be deprived of a great blog….I would consider monitoring comments before allowing them on your blog (all mine have to be approved before they show up). Just a thought from a faithful reader.

  2. Okey dokey, I’ll keep it public then. I respect your opinion Tammy as you’re a thoughtful smart lady. I’ll just manage the comments and hopefully the trolls and spammers will dissipate!

  3. A lot of people are smart enough to spot a troll. Public is a better idea.
Besides that, it is WordPress that would have to be hacked to get anything personal on you and they are quite secure.

All that said, most of the dumpsters around here are padlocked and have been for years. But that’s just to keep others from dumping trash instead of going to the dump or keeping raccoons or bears out of them. (which is free, anyway)

  4. I gotcha! I find that when dumpsters are padlocked, eventually some employee gets lazy and keeps it unlocked OR it becomes too costly to have a compactor. The trolls and spammers I spoke of were sending me all types of comments from one website and several different emails and it seemed fishy.

  5. When in the admin setting, put the offending comments in the spam area or unapprove them. Then they will go there automatically in the future. We also used to get many spam comments, it may take some time to clear up.

I don’t think this site is big enough yet so that security will be updated, begging my pardon. Just keep your city anonymous and that should be good enough.

  6. Ruy – thank you. Good to know. I had received over 40 comments from the same person, so it was a little unnerving. So now all comments are moderated.

  7. I don’t know how familiar you are with WordPress, but there are some handy Plugins you can install to stop spam before it gets posted. I used one called “Askimet.”

  8. I would be very sad to see this blog go private. I mean today I did my second day of dumpster diving and I was excited so I googled dumpster diving blog and found your site. Though I am very curious to know your location.. I mean general. I live in Indiana and I was just curious which area of the States you were. Thanks.. I will be following your blog.

  9. Sara I’m in South Florida for the winter but I travel all over the country to dumpster dive.

I will be keeping my blog public, no plans soon to make it private.

When it gets hot here, I will go back up North for the summer. Maybe we’ll see you in Indiana?

    Happy Diving luv.
