Our Daily Bread

Filed under: Uncategorized — urbandumpsterdiver @ 8:48 pm

I do believe in God. I don’t go to church on a regular basis. But I do believe in God, Jesus and the Bible. I do believe that God wants us to help others. I do believe that God has given me the gift of finding things that are still good and giving it to others who need it, i.e. food.

On our way back from the local cooperative food/vitamin store, we decided to stop by one of our favorite haunts. About 100 loaves of bread were ready to be thrown out, all within a few days of their sell by date. (all of this bread can be frozen in your freezer for later use) Inside the stash was bagels, low calorie bread (Lord knows I need that), dinner rolls, hoagie rolls, cinnamon raisin bread and regular white bread. We took it all.

Our neighbors received a pile. Tomorrow we will be making delivery to a local church. Then onto an elderly couple who lives on a farm. And plenty left for us.

  2. Wow, how could they throw out so much perfectly good bread? I am sure everyone who received is thankful for your gift. Keep up the great work!

  3. Cheapchick – it’s about a week before sell date. And by law, they have to discard the bread when it has expired. They cannot keep it on the shelf because they have to make room for the NEW bread that the vendor is delivering. That’s fine, this bread will help a lot of folks.

  4. Thank you Miss Sondra. On the way home, an older man was parked next to my car. I approached him and asked him if he’d like some bread. He seemed reluctant. He said I just bought a loaf. I said well have some more, put it in your freezer, take as much as you want. I then put my hand on his shoulder and said Sir, God wants you to have this bread. He said yes ma’am and took it.

  5. Don’t know about other places but bread here that is old goes back to the distributor and they put it out in their shelves as DAY OLD bread and people buy it at discount. If it gets way too old they put cuts in the plastic bags and place them inside a cart, The whole cart sells for about 5$ or so and that is considered ANIMAL feed..deer and pigs etc. People who buy it from farms etc have to prove that is what they are doing with it. NOTHING goes to waste here. I would agree that some humans could use it just as well. In some places I would think it is donated to the needy, just not around here in MI. Bless you for helping so many in need.
