We had a surprise tonight at our local recycling center. A little possum all nestled in the plastics bin. He was probably cold so he wanted to settle in for the night. We put some newspapers around him to keep him warm. He didn’t flinch. Animals know when humans aren’t predatory. After recycling all of our plastic, glass, cans and paper we ventured on to our next dumpster.

Inside the dumpster was 2 crates of frozen fish, still in date. Several large containers of ice cream, toaster pastries for breakfast, some frozen vegetables, frozen tater tots, peanuts, bread, eggs, limes, milk, olives, mango slices, fresh fruit, deli sandwiches, ice cream pops and Slim Jim sausages. Probably could have gotten more but we were too cold and the truck was full.

The local food bank was thrilled to get the largess. We’re now thrilled to have tons of frozen tilapia and fish patties in our freezer.

May all of us have a happy, healthy and prosperous 2013.

  1. Amazing! Thanks for blogging this info, UDD. Nice shot of the possum, too. I think he or she was just playing possum.

  3. Wow that was quite exciting ..glad it wasn’t full grown or there could have been trouble. I have seen full grown possum’s attack and it is scary. Glad you could use all you got. You sure have neat places to find stuff. Happy New Year to you too. đŸ™‚

  5. I enjoy reading your blog and have done so for awhile. What you do may not be acceptable to many you are doing what people should do before you find the stuff in the dumpsters. There is no need for waste on the scale that us humans are doing. I don’t dumpster dive though I do look in lots of bins and find stuff that I bring home and either keep or donate to charity if I don’t know someone that use the items I find. I walk an average of twenty five kilometres a week for exercise and I collect cans and pick up garbage and often I find money. One day I found AUS$30 on the ground in a shopping car park. My secret is to be the first in car parks and pick up what is left behind from the evening before. I don’t get much for my cans but it keeps me fit and keeps the environment looking cleaner. Keep up the good work and I like the way you live your life and try to do so also. My philosphy is live on less and the less you have to earn/find
